The Aggitis River Springs Cave, also known by the name Maara caveis located in the municipality of Prosotsani, just 25 kilometers northwest of Drama.
Its peculiarity lies in the fact that is crossed by the river Agitis and is considered one of the largest River Caves in the world.
Its total length exceeds 21 kilometers, however only the first 500 meters can be visited, which give wonderful images to the visitor. The artificial walkway of the cave above the waters of the river enters its proper place, giving the possibility of watching the red stalactites with the amazing shades due to the existence of minerals such as manganese, iron, copper, etc.
This is the second longest cave in Greece, as well as the section known to date it reaches 5,278 meters in a straight linewhile it is one of the most important tourist attractions of Eastern Macedonia.
The story of the cave begins with its discovery in September 1978, when Greek and French speleologists argued that the waters of the river must pass through a cave, based on certain natural phenomena, and did not fall out. The excavations that started in 1992 revealed the true age of the cave which amounts to 30,000 thousand years ago, based on the findings of the prehistoric era that came to light (bones of prehistoric animals such as mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, big horn, as well as several stone tools).
The visitable cave is divided into two rooms. The “Acropolis”, which holds the reins of being the first with the largest dimensions of a Greek cave, but also in the “hall of the wheel” with the huge iron water wheel, which during the first half of the 20th century covered the water supply needs of the surrounding areas.
As for the surrounding area of the cave, it is also very interesting, with lush vegetation full of towering plane trees, willows and poplars in a natural environment that offers wonderful colors, vivid images and relaxation by the river waters.
