Right behind it are the fascinating pink lakes of Agios Prokopios which, especially now in winter, are like springing from a fairy tale; although they have not received the best treatment from the local authorities.
The lakes spread over a huge area, and are separated from the beach by the dunes located in the area. As reported to naxostimes.gr by the Association “Wildlife Protection of Naxos” live and reproduce mainly river whistles and sea whistles and other “invisible” creatures of nature that give this special pink color to the waters of the lakes. Many times the lake hosts other migratory birds.
Their water is salty, while they do not have much depth.
“The pink-red color of the water in basins with very high salinity is due only to the growth of microorganisms in the water and specifically the following two. First, in the growth of a bacterium that is resistant to very high salinity and is called Halobacterium salinarum. Second, in the development of a phytoplankton species (microalgae) that also withstands very high salinities and is called Dunaliella salina. Also in some other organizations which also contribute secondarily and indirectly to the color and the living richness of the ultra-salty waters “says Mr. Georgios Hotos, professor at the University of Patras, Plankton Cultivation Laboratory, Department of Animal Production, Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The pink lakes of Agios Prokopios have been brutally trampled and degraded by the indifference of those in charge who not only do not protect this natural wealth of the place that could be another pole of attraction for tourists, but on the contrary degrade it in every way.
The lakes in summer naturally shrink and become… road and parking for visitors to the area while bird nests are destroyed. Also, it is not uncommon in the past to report that sewage even fell into these lakes…
