The intention of Athens, as officially stated on Thursday by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to call a joint meeting of all coastal countries of the region (Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus and Libya), commented SKAI correspondent in Istanbul Manolis Kostidis.
The Prime Minister’s statement, with clear reference always in the law of the sea, prescribes mobility in the direction of settlement of geopolitical outstandings in the wider region, particularly with regard to the definition marine zones. As Mr. Mitsotakis said, the challenges in the current situation for the Eastern Mediterranean countries are many.
In the matter an active role has been undertaken by the Lebanese-American businessman Massad Boulos brother-in-law of Donald Trump (left in the photo) and advisor to the American presidency on the Middle East. Mr. Boulos has made contacts with all sides, and the issue is starting to mature. Athens’ proposal comes amid major disagreements between Greece, Turkey and Libya.
“Mr. Mitsotakis’ proposal is very big news, we will have developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, let’s see what will happen with the cable, it may take some time for it to be approved” noted Manolis Kostidis. Greece and Turkey seem to agree for meeting, there seems to be convergence he added.
It is recalled that the Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan had spoken about a forum of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean.
“Turkey has rights and jurisdiction in the western part of the island of Cyprus, while Turkish Cypriots have legal rights in the surrounding areas. The Eastern Mediterranean Conference, which we proposed in the past, will contribute to the development of common ground” said Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan from the floor of the United Nations on September 23, 2025.
It is noted that energy giants such as Chevron and ExxonMobil intend to operate in the region.
