Both the book and the series are based on the real life of Gregory David Roberts
The last months of the year are full of TV and movie transfers. One more book to add to this list is Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Shantaram is set to launch next month as an Apple TV+ series starring Charlie Hunnam, who we’ve come to know and love from Sons of Anarchy.
In Shantaram Charlie Hunnam plays a fugitive, Lin Ford
Lin has just managed to escape from prison and all he wants is a fresh start for his life. Based on the accounts of people he has heard over the years, Mumbai seems like the perfect place to get lost in the crowd and start his life over. There, however, he very quickly meets an enigmatic woman, who saves him just before he is hit by a car. A special bond quickly develops between them, but the question marks multiply, as nothing around this woman seems easy and clear.
At the same time, Lin meets another person, with whom he seemingly develops a beautiful friendship. He even motivates him to start offering and helping a community in need. Lin sees this opportunity as a way to atone for his past mistakes and forgive all the people who hurt and trapped him. It certainly does not cross his mind, however, that this may be another trap set for him in India.
He is actually Australian by origin and several years ago he was in prison and managed to escape. Leaving there, he too found refuge in India, where he was able to stay for about a decade. In his book Shantaram describes all the adventures and everything he experienced during these years.
The new Shantaram series is slated to release on October 14 on Apple TV+.
