Two parts of the musical work “Memory of Freedom” will be presented for the first time in public performance
Parts of Markopoulos’ work on the liberation of the Aegean islands and the legendary Averof will be presented in a world premiere at the Herodio in the concert for the 60 years of the composer’s music.
Two parts, “the dance of claims” and “the sea of poets” (in lyrics by K.X. Myris) from his musical work “Memorial of Freedom” will be presented for the first time in public performance at the celebratory concert for his 60 years of music at the Herodes Atticus Conservatory on Tuesday, September 20.
Yannis Markopoulos composed the work “Memory of Freedom” in 2012 on the occasion of the Centenary (1912-2012) of the Liberation of the Aegean Islands, Epirus and Macedonia, during the Balkan Wars and the Integration of these areas into Greece, contributing to the territorial and population doubling of the country.
With the work, the composer wanted to pay tribute to our ancestors, who sacrificed for our freedom, as well as to the leaders of the time – political and military -, but also to the national benefactor Georgios Averof for his catalytic contribution through the battleship ” Averof” on the outcome of the games.
The project came as a result of the initiative and order of the then Mayor of Oinoussa, Evangelos Angelakos.
