Did you know that in Greece there is a desert in which there is white sand, high dunes and minimal vegetation.
It is a place that when you visit in summer, you should arm yourself with enough water bottles to withstand the dehydration and merciless temperatures. Its length reaches 2 kilometers and the width of 500 meters.
We are in the Peloponnese, specifically in Elafonisos, on its south side. In a large area, near Simos beach, there is this desert with the rare white sand.
The beautiful monotony of the landscape is interrupted only by a few cedar plants, which are the only ones that can survive in this adverse environment. Visitors to the beach of Simos experience a small part of this special environment by walking to reach the beach. The numerous and high dunes have been formed by the winds, which blow frequently and strongly in the area.
On the one hand they accumulate the sand and form the dunes, on the other hand they help with the waves to erode the underlying rocks and create new amounts of white sand.
Walking in this eerie but also beautiful landscape, you get the “smell” of the Sahara desert and feel a nugget of what the environment will be like there. The big difference, of course, is that in this Greek desert, with comparatively much less walking you reach the coveted sea and taste its coolness. Enjoy the flight!
