The nearly 14m tall giant letters will be cleaned and painted in a process estimated to take eight weeks.

The famous “Hollywood Sign”, the trademark of Los Angeles, will shortly be 100 years old standing on the hill, so the authorities decided to give it a… facelift.

The last time the sign was repainted was a decade ago, for its 90th birthday. Now the giant letters, nearly 14 meters high, will be cleaned and painted in a process estimated to take eight weeks.

According to the Guardian’s report, 947 liters of paint and primer will be needed, while anyone who wishes can follow the progress of the work through The Hollywood Sign website.

“The Sign is the pride of Los Angeles, and we’re excited for fans around the world to see this makeover for a very special 100th anniversary,” said Hollywood Sign Trust President Jeff Zarrinnam.

The story of the most famous sign

The sign was first put up in 1923 as Hollywoodland for 18 months by developer and Los Angeles Times newspaper owner Harry Chandler, who wanted to advertise real estate.

It was divided into three sections, HOLLY, WOOD and LAND, which in fact at night were lit first each separately and then all together. However, due to its high recognition, combined with the rise of the Hollywood film industry, it was maintained.

Changed to Hollywood by the Chamber of Commerce in 1949.

Over the decades, it has received arson attacks and one tragic death was recorded.
