James Earl Jones: The “voice” of Dar Vader is retiring

After almost half a century, 45 years, embodying the iconic voice of the “lord of evil” Darth Vader in the Star Wars universe, the James Earl Jones officially signed the surrender of the rights he owned to the character. This shows Jones retiring from Vader, which makes sense considering he’s 91 years old today. However, although Jones is retiring from the character, recording engineers at Disney, which now owns the rights to the George Lucas universe, will retain Vader’s voice via Artificial Intelligence (AI), with Jones stating that he “wants to keep Vader alive.”

As people age, their voices also tend to change, and the tone of the voice of the “dark lord” in the 1970s is actually quite different from today.

Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in film history: he was ranked third on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Heroes and Villains.

The British actor David Prowse, the first to kinematically embody Darth Vader in the Star Wars cinematic saga passed away at the age of 85 in November 2020. Prause thought his voice would also be heard, so he was unpleasantly surprised to learn of the dubbing by the American his colleague.
