At the south-western tip of Aegina, nestled in a calm bay of a lovely peninsula, lies a quiet, traditional fishing village, the well-known Perdika, which is only 25 minutes from the island’s port by local transport.
It is a picturesque settlement with cobbled streets, beautiful little houses with manicured, whitewashed yards, great views and famous fresh fish.
The elevated coastal promenade with its restaurants, ouzo bars and bars right in front of the well-known stone steps that lead to the port and the small beach is bustling with life throughout the year, but as the weather warms up and the shops spread out their tables on the sun, then the “heart” of the Partridge beats stronger in a summer rhythm that drags all those in front of it with it.
Enjoy whatever your appetite takes, walk between the picturesque narrows and end up at the church of Agios Sozontos, at the tip of the peninsula, listening to the cool breath of the sea through the sun-dried rocks.
And if you have time and appetite, climb the opposite hill to the ruins of the naval forts of the German Occupation. Somewhere in between, look for the tiny church-pilgrimage that reminds everyone of the old location of the church of Agios Sozontos, which the Germans demolished in order to perfect the fortifications of the area. The new temple was built in its current location in the summer of 1950, in an attempt by the residents to avoid the mined area that it originally was.
On September 7, the feast day of the Saint, a big festival is held in Perdika, the largest in terms of visitors, which also marks the end of the summer season not only for Perdika, but for the whole of Aegina.
But until then… summer is ahead and the Partridge is just opening its wings.
