Although the show’s creator Cheryl Leach originally wanted Barney to be a symbol of “inclusion” and “acceptance”, his massive success was met with hate and backlash, so much so that Bob West received “violent and clear” threats death aimed at him and his family members. There were also rumors that Barney was hiding drugs in his tail.

As Leach’s beloved character became more and more popular, people couldn’t accept that it was just a show. And so the attacks began, as Joyner recounted in the trailer for the docu-series.
