More than 6,000 people typed Mário Gomes’ number at electronic voting machines in Rio de Janeiro this Sunday (2). The actor received 6,151 votes, an insufficient amount for him to win a seat in the legislative assembly for the Republicans, one of the current president’s base parties. Mário accepts his own defeat, but gets excited when commenting on the partial victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) over Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the first round of the elections.
In one fell swoop, he amends three questions, two statements, a nasty nickname, and a piece of advice to the reporter on the other end of the cell line. “Bread with bologna is still very popular, right? You don’t like me saying that? It’s because then they send you away, right? You can’t speak badly about Nine Fingers [como ele refere a Lula], that’s it. The old press no longer exists. I only watch YouTube and Jovem Pan. You should quit this job, my daughter!” she barked.
Mário, 69, is part of the Bolsonarista current that still questions the fairness of the elections. He says there was fraud but doesn’t really know why. “Bolsonaro was supposed to have won in the first round. Fact. But that’s ok. Brazil is with him”, says the actor, to then aggressively repeat some maxims from the speech of the captain’s supporters.
“Who will be on the side of that disgrace? [o candidato petista]. Explain to me: who will want to see Brazil going through the same things that happen in Venezuela, Cuba and Argentina?”, he asks, already confessing one of his greatest afflictions, if Lula is elected.
“Me and my wife [Raquel Palma] we are worried about losing our home. It is said that in Colombia, properties over 65 square meters will be shared with other families. This will happen here!”, despairs the actor, who lives in a comfortable house overlooking the sea, on Joatinga Beach, close to where he set up a cart to sell hamburgers four years ago.
Business is at a standstill (“It’s not summer now”), and he says he’s been living off a music studio he’s set up. Even being informed that he does not run the risk of having to compulsorily share his house with other people, Gomes does not seem to be satisfied. “Aren’t you worried? You must be protected because you work in a newspaper, right?”, assesses the actor.
The speech was completed with criticism of the Rouanet Law and the flag that refers to communism and the PT. “The artists support this guy because they suckle on the tits and because they are sold. They use public money in exchange for raising a red flag here, another there. Our flag is not red, it never was and I hope it never will be”, he concludes.
