The Art Theater celebrates 80 years with a rich program

by

This year, the Art Theater is trying to resist “over-productivity” by investing in large partnerships (National Theatre, DIPETHE of Crete), in new productions that will be played for a longer period of time than usual, in repetitions of successful performances such as “Motel”, but also in creative “recycling” of performances

With an eye on the future, the Karolo Koun Art Theatre, which this year completes 80 years of artistic creation and educational offer, presents a rich repertoire in the 2022-2023 season, which includes 17 performances and many actions, investing in great partnerships, in new ambitious productions, in repeats of successful performances, but also in the creative “recycling” of older productions.

“This anniversary gives us the opportunity to ask ourselves how we continue on the threshold of a new, unknown era, but also how the theatrical process can now be a sustainable process precisely because “the only reward is the future”, notes the artistic director of Theater of Art, Marianna Kalbari, and adds:

“Creative recycling, about which there is so much talk today, is nothing more than the basis of theatrical art itself. All the “stories” have in some way already been told. The big question is how we rewrite them or how we retell them through the prism of our time, but also what new stories, what new issues are born in a changing world: The consequences of the climate-energy-geopolitical crisis, the way in which our lives are now defined by technology, the evolution of morals, the reversal of gender stereotypes, diversity, inclusion and so many other issues that we wish to approach through new playwriting programs (“Dramaturgia Now”) but also the presentation of new theatrical texts ( “Second bell”)”.

As far as programming is concerned, this year the Art Theater is trying to resist “over-productivity” by investing in large partnerships (National Theatre, DIPETHE of Crete), in new productions that will be played for a longer period of time than usual, in repeats of successful shows such as “Motel “, but also in the creative “recycling” of performances that are “reworked” by their creators such as “Antigone”, “Stella with the red gloves”, “The Bridge of Arta and the ligers of the Underworld”, “Artaud Trilogy”.

The repertoire is dominated by great foreign (Shakespeare, Anouille, Camus, Fassbinder) and Greek authors (Aristophanes, Campanellis) but also interesting contemporary (mainly) Greek and foreign works. The two main thematic axes of the repertoire are: Women who collide with the obstacles that their time poses to them (Antigone, Stella, Freedom in Bremen, Photograph 51, Bridge of Arta) but also the imprint of our time on morals (Misunderstanding, Looking the father, Exaggerations, What to do), while the spring period is generally characterized by an experimental character.

Also, important directors-directors (such as Thodoris Ambazis, Ioli Andreadis, Yiannis KaLavrianos, Akylas Karazisis, Nikos Mastorakis, Vassilis Mavrogeorgiou, Elli Papakonstantinou, Yannos Perlegkas, Maria Protopappa, Yannis Houvardas, Takis Tzamargias) collaborate but mostly re-collaborate with the Art Theater which strengthens its ties with an increasingly stable core of collaborators.

In relation to sustainability, in addition to the -inevitable- creative recycling of sets and costumes for years, the Art Theater is abolishing the printing of printed materials from this year, wanting to invest more in digital media. At the same time, he looks for and plans ways that will allow him to energetically upgrade his scenes.

The goal of the theater, according to Mrs. Kalbari, is a meaningful communication with the friends of the Art Theater, making the theater a place where the public can have a more “experiential” theatrical experience through participation in open rehearsals, workshops, meetings, discussions with creators etc. In fact, in this context, he is proceeding with the re-establishment of the “Association of Friends of the Art Theatre”.

Finally, the “digital repertoire” of the Art Theatre, which was established on the occasion of the pandemic and presented in the last two years a series of web and audio productions created especially for the internet, continues this year with the support of the Ministry of the Interior. In particular, the web and the audio work that stood out in the competition of digital works announced in 2021 by the Art Theater with the theme “And the mouths uttered what the heart felt” will have their digital premiere.

“Freddy” by Eddie Diamantopoulos is the web project that stood out and will have its digital premiere on October 30. The project was filmed on the stage of Phrynicho with simultaneous shooting by ten cameras directed and filmed by Diamantis Karanastasis. The audio project “Cruise” by Christina Christofis was also distinguished in the competition, which will premiere as a podcast on November 15 in a performance designed as an audio experience.
