A total of 268 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed in Greece, from the beginning of the 2022 period, until 04 October
Fourteen new cases of the virus of the West Nile were diagnosed during the last week, from the previous weekly EODY report to today. They have 26 deaths were recorded in patients with viral infection and CNS manifestations, aged over 61 years (median age of deceased = 85 years). Two additional deaths of patients with diagnosed West Nile virus infection were attributed to other serious co-occurring health problems (not included in the total number of deaths).
A total of 268 domestic cases of infection with the virus have been diagnosed in Greece, from the beginning of the 2022 period, until October 4 (11:00 a.m.), according to the Organization’s weekly epidemiological report. 177 had CNS manifestations (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 91 had mild (eg febrile illness)/no CNS manifestations.
In the period 2022, until 4/10/2022, cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in Greece, in settlements in the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki and in the Regional Units of Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria, Halkidiki, Serres, Trikala, Larissa , Kavala, Drama and Fthiotida. It is considered possible and expected that further cases will be diagnosed in the coming period (and in view of the awareness of health professionals), reports EODY.
In the European Union and in countries neighboring it, during the period 2022, until 28/09/2022, cases of infection with the DN virus have been recorded – apart from our country – in: Italy, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Germany, Hungary , Croatia, Spain and Serbia.
The epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the timely implementation of appropriate integrated mosquito control programs and the adoption of personal protection measures against mosquitoes are the most appropriate measures to control the disease.
