Social media post following backlash over casting drag queen for role – ‘Equal opportunity for all’.
The Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Nikolas Giatromanolakis, supported the selection of a transgender woman as the protagonist in the chamber opera “Strella” by Lyrika, after the reactions caused by the choice of a drag queen and not a transgender for the role, with his post on Facebook.
Trans the transsexual are people who perceive their gender differently from the gender they were assigned at birth.
The deputy of Culture expressed the State’s firm position to support diversity and equal opportunities for all.
“The more mature thinking of the Greek National Opera to expand the auditions and their scope in order for the production of “Strella” to be essentially inclusive and the process to be absolutely transparent reflects the will of the State to follow the principle of equal treatment and impartiality” he characteristically emphasized.
The background
Despite the initial announcement by ELLS that it is looking for transgender women, finally after the auditions and after not finding the right one for the role – an experienced lyrical singer – drag gueen (a man who dresses as a woman) was chosen.
The decision caused an uproar and strong reactions in the Queer community (an “umbrella” term referring to gender minorities), as a result of which the ELLS “cancelled” the man’s employment and ordered new hearings until a suitable transgender woman was found.
