At a very short distance from its cape Partridge in Aegina, there is a beautiful green island called Moni, being the property of the Holy Monastery of Chrysoleontissa of Aegina. Its peculiarity is that its inhabitants are none other than… some wild animals.
For thirty whole years, from 1960 to 1990, the Monastery belonged to the Hellenic Touring Club, to whose members it owes the significant number of wild animals that now make up the island’s ecosystem, while since 1962 it has been declared a Natural Breeding Park game.
There they live freely in the forest deer of the Rhodian species, squirrels and many peacocks, which are quite familiar to humans. Also, wild goats of the kri-kri type climb undisturbed on the rocky parts of the island, which often quench their thirst with the sea water. In the past there were also other species such as hares and ponies, which unfortunately did not survive.
