The symptoms of burnout are unpleasant and tend to multiply in the times we live in
Burnout has the power to deplete our energy, demotivate us, and make us feel like giving up on our goals.
According to a recent study, more than 10 million workers in Britain had to ask for sick leave because of the work burnout they were experiencing.
But it seems to be even more critical for women than for men: Thinking about the challenges of the last two years and the problems women face with their work rights, such as the pay and promotion gap, it is not difficult to understand reason.
Of course, the social expectations of women are high, which means that the pressure they feel in the workplace is even more amplified by their everyday life.
Clinical psychologist Dr Roberta Babb shared with Stylist three simple ways to feel better and relieve work burnout.
Stop and take a breath
You can start with something very simple: Breathe! As Dr Roberta Babb explains: “When you experience burnout, you feel out of control. However, breathing is something you can always turn to.” A very powerful tactic is to stop what you are doing and focus for a few minutes on your breathing.
“To take mindful breaths, you can inhale through the nose for a count of four, then hold your breath for a count of two, and exhale through the mouth for a count of six,” recommends the expert. With this simple technique your body and mind will focus on the calm you need.
Check your stress level
The truth is that no matter how much you want to, it is unlikely that you will deal with burnout by doing more and more things. For this, you should focus on specific situations. The first step is to check your stress level to find out what is really stressing you out. Only in this way will you be able to make substantial changes according to Dr Roberta Babb.
She emphasizes the necessity of identifying the issues that cause you anxiety in order to be led to everything that will help you deal with it.
Set boundaries
“Part of your stress is due to the fact that you are always available for everything,” says the expert. This comes from the difficulty you face when you want to recognize and set your limits. Boundaries are necessary to have a healthy personal, social and professional life. That doesn’t mean you have to say no to everything.
It means you need to start saying yes to protecting yourself. Boundaries will create a new “space” for you, in which you can breathe freely, think differently, and take control of your life. Thus, you will immediately see relief from the stress you experience at work, and burnout will now be a thing of the past.
