With speaker Katerina Campanelli on the life and work of her father
On the occasion of his proclamation by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports “Literary Year 2022 Iakovos Kampanellis”, the Greek Embassy in Sweden, in collaboration with the Swedish Federation of Greek Associations and Communities and the Department of Modern Greek Studies of Lund University, organized event for Iakovos Campanellis with his daughter and heir to his archive as the main speaker, stage designer Katerina Campanelli at the conference hall of the Municipality of Solna. The event, which was coordinated by the associate professor of Modern Greek Studies at Lund University and president of the European Society of Modern Greek Studies Dr. Vassilis Sambatakakis, the ambassador of Greece in Sweden, Andreas Fryganas, the president of the Federation of Greek Associations and Communities of Sweden Moussis Nikolaidis and the vice-president of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Solna, expatriate Giorgos Kontorinis, greeted him.
As stated in a related announcement, Mrs. Kampanelli in her speech, entitled “The fairy tale named Iakovos Kampanellis”, “unfolded the entire work and life of one of the most important and prolific Greek playwrights of the 20th century, who was born in Naxos , in 1921. He referred to the manifold qualities of his talent and in particular:
– of Campanelli as a playwright.
Kampanellis wrote more than 40 plays. Special emphasis was placed on “Court of Miracles”, the pivotal work that establishes Campanelli as a reformer of (post-war) modern Greek drama and on “Magalo masirko” which was written and performed during the years of the Dictatorship.
– of Campanellis as screenwriter.
Iakovos Kampanellis wrote the screenplays of 18 films, several of which were distinguished in Greek and international film festivals. Stella (1955) won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The Dragon (1956) participated in the Venice Film Festival and is considered one of the 10 best Greek films of all time, while the film Girls in the Sun (1958) was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
– of Iakovos Campanellis as an essayist, poet, lyricist, and prose writer
Katerina Campanelli shocked with the description of the personal experience in the concentration camp of the then only 21-year-old Iakovos, who almost twenty years after his release wrote his autobiography – and his only prose – “Mauthausen”. This book emerges as a leading expression of anti-war literature and is universally considered one of its reference works on concentration camps. The Ballad of Mauthausen to lyrics by Campanelli was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis and was considered by the New York Times as the most beautiful work ever written about the Holocaust.”
Excerpts from 4 of the author’s plays, “Court of Miracles”, “He and his Pants”, “The Four Table Legs”, “The Funeral” were performed by the actors of the Stockholm amateur theater group Emmanuela Ramoli, Dimitra Lazaridis, Nopi Savvidou, Christos Savlakis, Katerina Tzioufa, Gerasimos Louto and Anastasio Tebaldi, under the guidance of the actor and graduate of the drama school of Agia Varvara “Iakovos Kampanellis”, Athanasios Kouvousis.
