Seu Jorge case: Police summon club president to testify and want to hear witnesses

by

Delegate who investigates the case about the racist attacks on singer Seu Jorge during a concert in Porto Alegre (RS), Andréa Mattos told F5 which he intends to summon this Tuesday morning (18) to depose the president of Grêmio Náutico União, a traditional gaucho club and place where the presentation took place. According to her, an inquiry has been opened for investigation.

“I gave the club three days to provide us with the images and I will summon the president of the club and ask for the organizing team to be identified. After that, I want to analyze the images and verify what was said. Then I want to hear witnesses “, explains the delegate, who also calls for more people who have gone to the show and witnessed the acts to manifest themselves both at the police station and via WhatsApp (51) 98595-5034.

Despite this, the delegate says that from what she has seen in the videos that circulate on social networks, there was racist practice in the presentation, but that possible arrests are more difficult to happen. “Obviously, the stain on the criminal record of those who commit this act is heavy”, she reinforces.

The president of the gaucho club should be heard on Thursday (20) in the early hours of the morning. “The idea is to listen to everyone, including people who were working on the day. Let’s see if we can identify the authors. We want to conclude this and other cases always in a short time, but we depend on several factors”, completes the delegate Andréa Mattos.

Grêmio Náutico União, in an official note, said it would investigate the case and “if the practice of a racist act is proven, those involved will be held accountable”. He also stated that he respects Seu Jorge and that he repudiates racism.

THE CASE

Seu Jorge was harassed and suffered racist attacks from the audience of a show held this Friday (14), at Grêmio Náutico União, a traditional club in Porto Alegre. Witnesses report on the networks that the demonstrations began shortly before the end of the show, when the singer called on stage a teenage musician, black, who played cavaquinho.

Seu Jorge then made a brief speech against lowering the age of criminal responsibility, in which he mentioned the death of young black people in the favela. As soon as he left the stage “the avalanche of boos began, screaming bum!, bastard!, and the expected myth!, myth!, myth!”, described one of the people present at the show. Monkey imitations were also heard from the audience.

Hours after the incident, the singer spoke for the first time about the racism he suffered. He shared a nine-minute video on Instagram, with the flag of Rio Grande do Sul in the background, explaining what happened.

The musician said he was hired by Grêmio Náutico União to perform a show reserved for members only. He said it was a gala dinner “with people very, very well dressed for the occasion” and there were no blacks except the staff.

“The black people I met were only the employees. I heard that they were forbidden to look at me or talk to me when I arrived at the concert venue”, said Seu Jorge, who hugged and took pictures with all the employees.

The singer said that he is even more united in the fight against racism, misery and lack of opportunities in Brazil that affect blacks. “We will be in the fight together denouncing and fighting all types of typification of our people and responding with excellence, preparation, courage, wisdom and diplomacy. We will never, ever bow to racism and intolerance whatever it may be”, concluded the artist.
