The award comes with a cash prize of £25,000
Little Simz won the 2022 Mercury Prize for her fourth album, ‘Somely I Might Be Introvert’.
The 28-year-old rapper and actress from north London was the only nominee for the second time, having claimed the music award for her third album, ‘Grey Area’ in 2019.
Accepting the award at London’s Eventim Apollo on Tuesday night, Simz, whose real name is Simbiatu Ajikawo, was initially speechless before saying: “I’m very shocked, I’m very grateful. God thank you so much, thank you my family here, my loved ones here. I want to say a huge “thank you” for this incredible, incredible award. I want to say a “thank you” to my brother and close associate, producer Inflo. We created this album together. There were moments in the studio when I didn’t know if I was going to finish this record…”.
The London-born artist of Nigerian parents also thanked her fellow nominees.
“You’re all incredible, we’ve all made incredible albums, we’re all changing people’s lives with our music and that’s the most important thing, so this award is really for us,” he said.
The award, given to the best British or Irish Album of the Year, comes with a cash prize of £25,000.
