Kanye West, 45, is having an unfavorable week. After having his contract with Adidas terminated, he tried to partner with competitor Skechers, but was eventually escorted out of the company.
The artist commented on his financial losses in a message directed to the executive Ari Emanuel published on Instagram. One of Hollywood’s biggest agents, Emanuel recently suggested that companies stop working with the rapper because of the anti-Semitic comments he made on social media.
“I lost $2 billion [mais de R$ 10 bilhões] in a day and I’m still alive,” he said. “This is love speech, I still love you, God still loves you. Money is not who I am, people are who I am.”
Last week, Emanuel published an article in the specialized newspaper Financial Times in which he condemned the fashion and entertainment brands that had projects with the singer. “West is not just anyone, he is a pop icon with millions of fans around the world, among them many young people whose visions are still being formed,” he explained. “Silence and inaction are not options.”
Shortly before, the singer’s Twitter and Instagram had been restricted after he wrote something like “alert against the Jewish people”. At the time, he closed an initial deal to buy the social network Parler, popular among the conservative public.
At the time, luxury brand Balenciaga said it had cut ties with the artist and had no future projects with him. Then came the termination of the sports brand Adidas, with whom he had partnered since 2016. Another contract, with Gap, had already been terminated by West last month.
With his contracts up, Ye, as the rapper is also known, is looking for other options to maintain his billion-dollar income. However, the approach was not well received by shoe maker Skechers.
The company said the singer “showed up unannounced and uninvited” at the Los Angeles office. “[A Skechers] has no intention of working with West,” the company said in a statement.
