The famous actress explained how her parents, Walter and Betty Roberts, could not pay the hospital bill

Excerpt from an interview given by Julia Roberts on Gayle King is making the rounds on the internet. In conversation on A+E Networks and History Channel’s HISTORYTalks, Julia Roberts reveals a surprising fact about herself—that the Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King paid for the maternity hospital when he was born.

The snap resurfaced online as the American actress turned 55 on October 28.

“Let’s start with the day you were born — who paid the hospital bill?” asked Gayle King, who was praised by Roberts for her good reporting. “Her research is very good,” said the American actress.

Julia Roberts explained how her parents, Walter and Betty Roberts, “couldn’t pay the hospital bill” so the King family took care of it.

“My parents had a theater school in Atlanta called the Actors and Writers Workshop, and one day Coretta Scott King called my mother and asked if her children could attend because they were having trouble finding a school that would be accepted.

“And my mother replied: ‘Sure, come.’ And that’s how they all became friends and helped us get through the difficult situation,” noted Julia Roberts.

Gayle King pointed out, “Yeah, because in the ’60s, little black kids couldn’t interact with little white kids in Acting School. And your parents said: “Come.” I think that’s great, and it kind of sets the stage for who you are,” the TV presenter said.

“Oh, absolutely,” Roberts replied.
