Leonardo DiCaprio and other Hollywood actors celebrate Lula’s victory

The actor, known for his environmental activism, fell out with Bolsonaro in 2019

Leonardo DiCaprio is among the many Hollywood figures who were thrilled with the presidential outcome elections in Brazil.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvathe country’s left-wing former leader, won the election over far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.

Leonardo DiCaprio tweeted: “The outcome of the Brazilian election is an opportunity to change the course of history, not just for Brazil and the Amazon, but for the world.”

DiCaprio, known for his environmental activism, fell out with Bolsonaro in 2019 after the then-president made a completely unfounded claim that the actor “paid” for fires in the Amazon rainforest.

Other actors also celebrated Lula’s win, according to THR. “Star Wars” star Mark Hamill wrote on his Twitter account: “Congratulations to the newly elected president of Brazil: Lula da Silva!!! #ByeByeΒolsonaro.”

“Star Trek’s” George Takei also expressed satisfaction with the result on Twitter, writing: “They defeated extremism and fascism in Brazil. Let’s do it in America.”

Before the election, other celebrities also expressed their support for Lula.

“The election in Brazil may determine whether the Amazon rainforest continues to be the ‘lungs of the world’ or is deforested for short-term profit,” commented singer and actress Barbra Streisand.
