The Brazilian Teresa Santos failed to qualify among the 16 semifinalists of the Miss Universe 2021. With that, the Cearense from Maranguape is out of the competition for this year’s title.
This is the first time in a decade that the Brazilian representative is left out of the first cut. Last year, Júlia Gama from Rio Grande do Sul was in second place, behind only Mexican Andrea Meza.
The last time Brazil had been left out of the first cut was in 2010, with Débora Lyra from Minas Gerais. Since then, all Brazilian misses have placed at least 20th place — the number of semifinalists has varied between 20 and 13 during those years.
Santos was considered one of this year’s favorites by experts. “I think Teresa is a very beautiful woman, speaks extremely good English and even has a very good accent,” said Henrique Fontes, director of the CNB (National Beauty Contest) and also one of those responsible for the Global Beauties website, to the column From Band to Crown, of the F5.

Despite having been elected for about a month, aboard a cruise ship off the coast of São Paulo, Santos said she was prepared for the challenge in an exclusive interview with the column. She also stated that she could calmly see the fans’ demand for a good classification in the final.
“I feel more than prepared. It’s like I’ve been preparing for this for years, even though I didn’t know I was going to participate. I’m not afraid of losing and disappointing the fans. I could with my team, and I feel that people can see that,” he said.
