The television critics appear divided, with the evaluations touching the whole range of characterizations…
End of the long wait for its new, fifth season “The Crown” premiered 10 new episodes that were “loaded” onto the Netflix platform last Wednesday. Die-hard viewers of the show have been eagerly awaiting the new episodes, which come two months after Queen Elizabeth’s death.
Peter Morgan’s royal drama about Britain’s most famous family has been one of the most talked-about and controversial programs of late, especially with the wait for the final season.
The new episodes focus on developments in the 90s, dominated by the collapse of Prince Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana.
Their split follows a tumultuous period in their relationship, with the series dealing with the late Princess of Wales’ controversial Panorama interview and her memoir, along with the revelation of Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla, including their infamous conversation ” Tampongate’.
The first reviews of the fifth season came almost immediately after the new episodes were uploaded to the Netflix platform, showing that the division of opinion is well maintained.
Critics’ thoughts on ‘The Crown’ season 5
“Elizabeth is the ultimate star”
Carol Midgley rated the new season 4/5 stars in The Times, praising Elizabeth Debicki in particular for her portrayal of Diana, calling her the “absolute star” of the show. He also gave a special mention to Lesley Manville for her performance as Princess Margaret.
“Diana would love her”
Royal photographer Ken Lennox, who knew Diana personally, wrote in The Metro that we were moved by season five, which he also rated 4/5 stars. “Diana would kick off her shoes, jump on the couch and love every minute of this lavish royal soap opera,” while referring to Debicki as “the shining star.” He did not fail to point out, however, that there are also some boring and inaccurate scenes.
“Royals remain more relevant than ever”
In The Evening Standard, Melanie McDonagh gave the new season four out of five stars, saying it “doesn’t matter that some of what’s shown is pure speculation. The thing about ‘The Crown’ isn’t what it made up, but that a lot of what it shows is some really awful things that actually happened.”
Anita Singh of the Telegraph, on the other hand, took a different view, saying that this “drama is heading towards trashy soap opera” with this season’s storylines, giving it two out of five stars. “Peter Morgan’s Netflix drama began as a love letter to the late Queen. These days he’s holding his poison pen,” he wrote, adding that “it’s never been clearer that the author cares nothing for the feelings of the people he portrays.” She is scathing about the cast, saying Dominic “brings a light air” while Elizabeth “doesn’t have Diana’s sparkle”.
“Tiny and boring”
Jack Seale of The Guardian was unimpressed with the fifth series, calling it “irrelevant” and rating it two out of five stars. “It’s time for this boring show to end forever,” he wrote. “Its cast is cartoonish, the plot is filled with boring speeches, and many episodes could have been thrown out entirely.”
“It’s still weak”
Daniel D’Addario of Variety falls somewhere in the middle, saying that the show’s fifth season “is its weakest outing yet”, describing it as “generally scattered and unfocused”. Nevertheless, he praised Elizabeth’s performance, contrasting his assessment of Dominic, who he called “just wrong” and Imelda, who he said “gets away” from her character.
