The series is expected to premiere on Netflix on January 12, 2023
The Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda became known to the general public in 2018 when he won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with the film Shoplifters. This year, he makes his first TV and series debut with The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, in which he serves as creator, producer, co-writer and director of some episodes.
Everything you need to know about The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House
The new series is based on the manga of the same name by creator Aiko Koyama and deals with the story of Kiyo. Kiyo is a young woman who moves to Kyoto from Aomori Province to become a Makanai, a traditional cook, in a house where a group of apprentice geishas (Maiko) live together and share their daily lives.
The series sheds light on how geisha live in Japan, a culture that has certainly been distorted over the years and in the various narratives of modern pop culture. Along with Kiyo, we also meet Sumire, who arrives in Kyoto with Kiyo from Aomori and everyone believes that she has a rare talent as a geisha, a talent you find “once in a century”. We also meet Ryoko, a high school student and daughter of the headmistress of the Maiko house who plays an important role in how things turn out there. Momoko is the most popular Maiko there, while Yoshino is a former “classmate” of Momoko’s who finds herself once again among the old and familiar geisha there.
Through the series Hirokazu Kore-eda gave the opportunity to many young Japanese directors to participate
After all, his main desire since he became better known through the Cannes Festival is to include Japanese directors in the canon of world cinema. Each episode of this new series is directed by a different person and it will be interesting to see the alternative views of all these directors through their work.
The series is expected to premiere on Netflix on January 12, 2023.
