Case of racism with Seu Jorge: Expert analyzes videos to find new offenses

by

The case of racism suffered by singer Seu Jorge continues with ongoing investigations. According to the delegate of the case, Andrea Mattos, this Friday (11) more witnesses will provide clarification.

“We are at the stage of listening to some people. [sexta, 11] will be the image and sound team. Next week there will be another witness who said he heard the racist abuse, in addition to the band’s musicians. The rest is waiting for the expertise”, explains the delegate to the F5🇧🇷

According to her, the expertise analyzes more videos sent by the delegate herself. The idea is to try to improve the quality of the audios to detect if there was any other kind of racist offense that had not been noticed until then. “It’s one more piece of evidence”, says the delegate.

Andrea Mattos says that so far, seven people have been heard. Of that amount, she says that four actually witnessed discriminatory speeches.

Last Tuesday (8), the Board of Directors of the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul unanimously approved that Seu Jorge should receive a Farroupilha Medal of Merit. The event does not yet have a date to take place.

REMEMBER THE CASE

Seu Jorge was harassed and suffered racist attacks from the audience of a show held on October 14 at Grêmio Náutico União, a traditional club in Porto Alegre. Witnesses reported on the networks that the demonstrations began shortly before the end of the show, when the singer called on stage a teenage musician, black, who played the cavaquinho.

Seu Jorge then made a brief speech against lowering the age of criminal responsibility, in which he mentioned the death of young black people in the favela. As soon as he left the stage “the avalanche of boos began, with the screams of a tramp, bastard, and the expected myth!, myth!, myth!”, described one of the people present at the show. Monkey imitations were also heard from the audience.

Grêmio Náutico União, in an official note, said it would investigate the case and “if the practice of a racist act is proven, those involved will be held accountable”. He also states that he respects Seu Jorge and that he repudiates racism.

Days later, the artist gave his version to Fantástico (Globo). “We cannot condone cowardice. If you see any crime of racism, report it”, said the singer.

Asked by the reporter if the attacks were motivated by politics, the singer vented that there is no justification for racism. “We are dealing with violence that no longer fits in Brazil. The justification for racism does not exist, just as racism should not exist”, he emphasized.
