His reconstitution cave of Euripidesbut also of her extremely special physiognomy Salamisis pursued through experiential seminars on the ancient theater by the EOT in collaboration with the Drama School of the Art Theater, the director and theater scholar Chrysa Georgandas, the Municipality of Salamina and the Archeology professor and head of the excavation, Giannos Lolo.

In continuation of the action “Introduction to the Ancient Theater and the Work of Euripides” which took place for the first time in July 2022, in the cave of Euripides, in Salamis with students of Karolos Koun Art Theatre the results were presented as well as the planning for the future of the program, the promotion of the Cave and the promotion of the whole of Salamis as a historical and cultural destination.

Mrs. Marianna Kalbari, artistic director of the Karolos Koon Art Theater, greeting the guests and the students who were present, before giving the floor to the speakers commented that “I hope this is the beginning of a series of such actions that are beneficial for all of us , and for culture, for the theater, for our country”.

The president of the EOT, Angela Gerekouafter individually thanking all the contributors as well as the Municipality of Salamis for the valuable cooperation and help, referred to the project of promoting Salamis and not only for its legendary naval battle but also because there the footprint of our ancient tragedian, Euripides, it is all the more powerful than anywhere else as it is the cave where he meditated, which inspired some of his greatest works that travel around the world indelibly.”

“The idea to show the Salamis as a point of global cultural tourism because of its great history but also through the promotion of this wonderful natural monument that is the cave started” before the pandemic, which forced the implementation team to change its plans. However, the seminar took place as a pilot in 2021 and, now, with the participation of students in 2022, with the aim “to share with other mainly young people” the experience of the ancient theater and of Salamis, said the president of the EOT, adding that the island “also has an extremely rich folklore, it has a tradition of even more recent history, the Sicilian had his house there and many characteristics”, beyond of course its ancient history.

Mr. Giannos Lolos, head of the excavation in the cave of Euripides which “was carried out by the University of Ioannina, i.e. the excavation of the cave and the sanctuary of Dionysus, and lasted from 1994 to 2000” presented the four main evidences that in research but also the confirmation that it is indeed the cave of Euripides. Characteristically, he said that “the locals all knew about the cave”, but there was also the decision for the excavation and he characterized the organization of the series of seminars on the work of Euripides as “a very important cultural event, especially in Salamis, in the resting place of the great tragedian in the location Peristeria, located at the southernmost tip of the island.” Mr. Lolos also emphasized that the work to highlight the sanctuary of Dionysus and the cave was “one of the most difficult archaeological cave excavations in Greece, based on the quantity, character and interpretation of the numerous finds from its sites, the which had varied and changing uses during six different periods of Greek prehistory and history’.

The director Chrysa Georgantas he noted that “the foundations were laid for ancient theater seminars in the cave area with students of the Karolos Koun School of Theater Art and already organizing groups of students from abroad for next summer. We have already started.” “Beyond the results of the experiential seminar, the aim is to introduce to everyone the cave of Euripides, this closed private space of inspiration and spiritual creation” said Mrs. Georganda adding that the mere existence of the cave as a place of meditation “gives food for thought . Why does Euripides retire to meditate there? What does meditation mean? Through calculus? The reckoning of Zeus? We know that tragedies are full of dialogues. The cave of Euripides in Salamis is dark, labyrinthine, difficult, sometimes hideous and perhaps even frightening to some. So how can it be an ideal place for meditation?’ As she noted, based on the allegory of Plato’s cave, “we think that our caves speak of an imaginary world whose sight alone causes us great pain, as from the interior of a dark cave we suddenly emerge into the bright sunlight. From darkness to light. From ignorance to self-knowledge”.

At the end of the press conference, the visual artist and educator Jelina Pallas, who designed the experiential workshop together with Ms. Georgandas, presented videos and snapshots as a short timeline of the stages followed during the seminar so that the students of the Charles Art Theater Let them learn a little more about the “keys of ancient tragedy”, as Mrs. Gerekou described them.
