“Queen of Christmas” without the..TM Mariah Carey – “All I want for Christmas is your money?”

It was a Christmas dream and it’s gone… Her application Mariah Carey for the trademark “Queen of Christmas” was rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The American star’s application was rejected after her company did not respond to an objection filed by another singer.

The trademark (TM) would give Carey the legal right to obstruct other persons to use the title in music and merchandise. Carey also failed in attempts to trademark the abbreviations “QOC” (Queen of Christmas) and “Princess Christmas”.

The star became synonymous with this particular holiday season with the release of her famous 1994 track, All I Want for Christmas Is You.

Completing a 26-year journey, the ubiquitous holiday classic finally reached number one in the UK charts in 2020. Carey’s company Lotion LLC applied for the trademark last year, resulting in another singer, Elizabeth Chan, to file an appeal in August.

“Trying to cash in on Christmas”

Chan – who was dubbed the “Queen of Christmas” by The New Yorker in 2018 for releasing original holiday records every year for a decade – slammed her colleague for trying to cash in on Christmas.

“I feel very strongly that no one it should not monopolize anything around Christmas or monopolize it in perpetuity the way Mariah is going to,” Chan said in an interview with Variety in August. “This is not right. Christmas is for everyone. They are meant to be shared, not owned.” Chan went on to say that Carey was “trying to trademark everything” from music, clothing and alcohol, to “masks, dog collars – everything on the map.”

All I want for Christmas is your money’ one could say.
