Five productions compete for the best film award. Some of them stood out at the Cannes, Berlin and Venice festivals.

The 35th European Film Awards will be held this year on December 10 in Reykjavík.

The European Film Awards are the most important film awards at a pan-European level. Similarly to the Oscars, the awards are decided by an academy, the European Film Academy, which is why they are often called the “European Oscars”.

Five productions compete for the best film award. Some of them stood out at the Cannes, Berlin and Venice festivals.

“The Triangle of Sorrow” by Ruben Estlund

The Golden Palm of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The scathing satire, partly filmed in Evia, focuses on the relationship between two famous models, Karl and Yaya, who are invited on a luxury cruise, which ends in a shipwreck.

“Near” by Lucas Dodd

The film focuses on the relationship between two teenagers, Remy and Leo, who are truly inseparable. The Belgian director submits his second feature film, after the excellent “Girl”. A low-key poetic drama of particular sensitivity, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes.

“Holy Spider” by Ali Abbasi

Dark drama focusing on the true story of a serial killer in the Iranian city of Mashad who has fled his country and is now a Danish citizen.

The central character is a journalist who will stop at nothing to discover the truth and uncover the killer.

The film “Corset” by the Austrian Marie Kreutzer

Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known to everyone as Sissy, is a potato player. The focus is on the limitations faced by a woman in a position of power.

Carla Simon’s Alcarràs

An excellent example of a European co-production between Spain and Italy, which won the Golden Bear in Berlin.

The film is about a family of Catalan farmers who, after generations on the same land, face eviction and an uncertain future.
