Mila Kunis: Raised $37M for War Refugees – I’m Proud to Be From Ukraine

“When we saw that Putin was going after the whole country, we knew that a huge crisis was going to follow,” says the actress and model

Her story Talk to Kunis it’s pretty much a typical American story.

She was born in 1983 in the then-Soviet city of Chernivtsi (located in present-day Ukraine), where she and her relatives, some of whom were Holocaust survivors, saw other people facing anti-Semitism, oppression and lack of opportunity picking up and to move. It was a move her grandfather strongly resisted until—in a twist worthy of Hollywood—he saw Disneyland.

“His brother had moved to Los Angeles in the ’70s,” explains the 39-year-old actress and producer. “When my grandfather visited him, he took him with him and it changed his perspective on the possibilities of the West. He went back to Russia and said: “We’re leaving”.

In February, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Kunis, who moved to Los Angeles in 1991 at the age of 7, couldn’t imagine the horror of being forced to flee one’s ancestral home due to war. But he knew well the uncertainty of leaving a home, which you may never see again.

In response, she and her husband, Ashton Kutcher, started “Stand With Ukraine,” a GoFundMe to benefit flexport.org and airbnb.org, organizations that provide supplies and short-term housing to millions of displaced people.

To date, the effort has raised more than $37 million and the mission continues. She herself gave 3 million dollars to help the refugees of the war. “Helping – not even asking, just doing – should be a rule in our lives,” she says.

“When we saw that Putin was going after the whole country, we knew that a huge crisis was going to follow. “Because I’m from Ukraine, I started receiving phone calls from people who wanted to help, and despite the initial difficulties, together with my husband we managed,” the actress said in an interview with “People.”
