Director Guillermo del Toro seems to have taken quite a long break after winning the 2017 Oscars with Shape of Water. However, all this time, he was preparing something that no one expected. Specifically, he had in the works the remake of Nightmare Alley, the legendary noir film that premiered for the first time in 1947.
Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley was not enough on the black and white palette
In contrast to the noir of the time, the director chose to fill his own version with color. The story, however, remains the same. Stanton Carlisle works in the circus and learns next to a pair of psychics. The two of them had created an amazing communication code and pretended to be able to read the minds of each visitor. Stanton, being good with words and observation, learns how to pretend to be a psychic himself. This skill becomes the “golden ticket” to enter the most expensive salons in America in the ’40s. However, along the way he encounters various obstacles and people who want to expose him and stop his fight.
The film gains its glamor through its unique cast
With Bradley Cooper as the protagonist and Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara at his side, you understand that you are going to watch a miracle. However, Guillermo del Toro made sure from the beginning to assure the viewers that there is no supernatural element in his film. His characters act only on the basis of logic. However, this logic, when used correctly, gives the story a magical, almost mythological element.
The director even revealed that there is a black and white version of the film. This did not come about simply by changing the colors of the film in the editing. In fact, this version looks like a completely different movie from the ’40s and’ 50s movie theaters.
The film is expected to premiere in the coming days in theaters.
