by

The region of Pelion helps in its own way to the cultivation and development of flowers, since the microclimate of the place is special in combination with the famous Peliorite water that flows abundantly.

The Pelion, also called “Balcony of God”, is one of the most popular and favorite destinations for rest and holidays, in all seasons of the year. And it is famous for its natural beauty both in the mountainous and coastal areas, for the distinctive architecture, but also for the culture that give it uniqueness in the Greek area. Not many, however, know that it is the homeland of Greek flowers.

In Pelion there are the villages of flowers, where the colors and scents of nature are offered in all combinations. Ano Lehonia, Kato Lehonia, Agria a breath away from the center of Volos, scented by the aromas released by the flowers of the area. On the other side of Pelion, in the east, Mouresi, Kissos and Anilio are blessed places where flowers bloom all year round.

For the visitor of the area, it is a pleasant surprise when he sees the countless colors from the blooming flowers. Dozens of greenhouses, either on the road Volos-Kalen Nero, or inside, create an unprecedented feast of colors and aromas. Gardenias, camellias, chrysanthemums, carnations, pansies, roses, petunias, hydrangeas, geraniums, everything that exists in nature is there in full bloom and enchants those who see this wonder of nature.

The area helps in its own way in the cultivation and development of flowerssince the microclimate of the place is special in combination with the famous Peliorite water that flows abundantly.

The oldest say that the name of Lechonia is not accidental, since etymologically it comes from the word “lechona”, which refers to a productive and fruitful area. And perhaps they are right, since the fertility of the soil and the purity of the air, contribute to the earth supporting two and three fruitings in the same year.

The Chroni family in Kato Lechonia has been maintaining their nursery for the last 40 years, with all kinds of flowers. Speaking to APE-MPE, Stefanos Chronis said that his family was one of the first to become active. “Until the beginning of the 1980s, Lechonia was famous for its flowers, but what was happening was only amateurish. You could see gardenias and camellias for sale on the street, but they were simple and few and came from the unmasking of the yard plants of the neighboring houses. Over time, everything changed. Many colleagues are active today. Entire companies. There are also large exports,” he pointed out.

Lechonia, together with dozens of organized flower shops, is essentially the place where nurseries grow for every type of plant that can be grown in the Mediterranean area, because in addition to the excellent microclimate of the place, the general conditions of the area also help, as the temperature is rarely recedes to frost level.

On the other side of Pelion, to the east, the same scene prevails. Mouresi has the primacy of the region, specializing in camellias and gardenias. It is probably, according to agronomists and other experts, the coolest place, with a lot of rain, high humidity and strong shading. After all, the green in eastern Pelion is abundant and the vegetation is literally wild.

The visitor admires the gardenias, camellias and hydrangeas hanging from the balconies and verandas of the houses and shops in the villages of the area or sold in large square colorful tins. The fragrances are dizzying from the aromas that overwhelm the beautiful villages. After all, the scent of gardenia is proverbial and is the basic essence for many creations of world perfumery.

Kostas Karkalas, who has been dealing with flowers and gardenia cultivation for years in Mouresi, developing the work he got from his father, told APE-MPE: “We started from here in 1980, we also expanded to Platanidia, but gardenia it is an extremely sensitive and demanding plant. Beautiful, but also very troublesome. It needs a lot of attention and is vulnerable to bad weather. But it compensates you with its fragrance and its beauty. It can make you an entrepreneur, but it can also break you. We succeed and here in Pelion is a point of reference”.

It has been a goal for every visitor for years, after visiting Pelion, to buy flowers from the flower villages. To transport them and decorate his yard, garden, balconies or terraces with the beautiful and fragrant plants of the Mountain of the Centaurs.
