“Art is a necessity in the public sector,” stressed the Minister of the Interior, Makis Voridis
A unique work of art adorns the building of the Ministry of the Interior at 15 Vasilissis Sofias Avenue since Friday.
This is his sculpture international artist Kostis Georgiou bearing the name “Pegnion” which alludes in a modern and completely personal way to Tavrokataphasia, the ancient game of the Minoans of Crete. The work is a donation of the brothers Giorgos and Nikos Xylouris.
The impressive cobalt blue sculpture was unveiled by the Home Secretary Maki Voridis in an official ceremony in the presence of the sculptor Kostis Georgiou, the brothers Giorgos and Nikos Xylouris as well as a large number of guests and employees of the Ministry of the Interior.
Mr. Voridis expressed his thanks both to the sculptor Kostis Georgiou for his excellent artistic work and to the Xylouris brothers for their valuable donation, pointing out that art in the State should not be a luxury but a necessity.
“It is of great importance for our country to be able to have such works of art in public view, in public places” underlined the Minister and expressed the opinion that it would be desirable for the Greek government to obtain at some point a policy of purchasing works of art without ignoring however, the financial constraints and difficulties it faced and faces today.
Commenting on the subject of the sculpture, the Taurokataphasias, Mr. Voridis observed that it constitutes a dialogue between the ancient Greek tradition and modern art, opening a larger discussion about the history, tradition and identity of our homeland.
THE Kostis Georgiou he noted for his part that the placement of the sculpture in the courtyard of the Ministry of the Interior was made possible thanks to the philanthropic feelings of the Minister Mr. Makis Voridis himself and was implemented with the kind sponsorship of the brothers Giorgos and Nikos Xylouris. He also pointed out that the work “Pegnion” makes a clear reference to Taurokathapsia, the well-known sport of the Minoan era, in which the athlete performed jumps over a bull.
“Public sculpture makes sense as it is accessible to every citizen who can develop their own conversation with the sculpture” commented the international creator.
