Although there is no cure for SPS, there are treatments to slow the disease

Celine Dion diagnosed with the syndrome Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). The condition leaves sufferers like “human statues” as their bodies gradually lock down, leaving people unable to walk or speak.

While there is no cure for SPS, there are treatments to slow down the disease, with the singer revealing she does everything she can to minimize symptoms.

The 54-year-old singer addressed her fans in an emotional video on Instagram – in English and French – as she revealed that the particular health problem had forced her to cancel her European tour. This means that her concert in Greece, which was scheduled for the summer, is also cancelled.

The famous singer says: “As you know I’ve always been an open book and I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but now I’m ready.

I have been struggling with my health for a long time and it has been very difficult for me to face my challenges and talk about everything I am going through.

I was recently diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder. Although we are still learning about this rare disease, we now know that this is what is causing all the seizures I have had.’

Detailing the impact the condition has had on her, Celine Dion continued: ‘Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes making it difficult to walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing like I used to. .

It pains me to tell you today that this means I won’t be ready to resume my European tour in February.

I have a great team of doctors who work by my side to help me get better and my lovely children who support me and give me help.”

Finally, the singer added: “I am working hard with my medical team to get my strength back, but I have to admit it has been and is a struggle.

All I know is that singing is what I’ve done all my life and what I love to do the most.

I miss you so much. I miss seeing you all on stage and me singing for you. In order to get back to you I have no choice but to focus on my health right now and I have hope that I am on the road to recovery.

I want to thank you so much for your wishes, love and support on social media. This means a lot to me.

Take care of yourself. Be well. I love you so much and I really hope to see you again very soon.”

Celine Dion first hinted at her health problems in January when she canceled the North American dates of her Courage world tour from March 9 to April 22. The announcement came three months after she was forced to cancel her return to Las Vegas due to the same health issue.

It is the latest tragedy to strike Celine Dion, following the death of her husband Rene Angelil aged 73 in 2016. She has three sons with her late husband, Rene-Charles and twins Nelson and Eddy. She met Rene in Canada when she was just 12 and he was already 38. He became her manager. His devotion and support of Celine Dion reportedly led to him mortgaging his house so he could finance her debut album ‘La Voix du bon Dieu’ in 1981.

Rene and Celine officially started dating in 1987, when she was just 19 and he was 45, and in 1991 they got engaged. However, the great singer only made their romance public in 1993, and in December 1994 they got married in Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica.

Her husband died aged 73 of a heart attack while also suffering from terminal cancer in January 2016. Two days later, Celine Dion lost her brother Daniel, also to cancer.

That August, Celine released a tribute album to him in French titled “Encore un soir”, with a single of the same name that became a hit in French-speaking markets.
