“This is a first-hand account of Harry and Meghan’s story with never-before-seen footage from their personal archive.” It is with this warning that the documentary series “Harry & Meghan” begins, whose first three episodes were made available this Thursday (8) by Netflix.
Right at the beginning, the wife of the British prince is asked why she wanted to participate in the project. “I won’t say it’s comfortable, but when you feel like people haven’t been aware of who you are for so long, it’s really nice to be able to have the opportunity to let people see a little more of what happened and also who we are.” , he says.
The first episode centers on how the couple met. The prince says that he was using the Snapchat application when he saw a photo of the then actress with a filter with dog ears and muzzle. “Who is this?” he is said to have thought.
After flirting through social media, the two exchanged phones. They would only meet in person in 2016, when Meghan flew to London to watch the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
Harry compares the woman to his mother, Princess Diana. “A lot of who Meghan is and how she behaves is similar to my mother,” he says. She has the same compassion, the same empathy, the same confidence. She has this sweetness to her.”
The second episode deals with when Harry and Meghan publicly assumed their relationship, which caused her life to be radically changed with the constant harassment of the British tabloids. “The truth is, no matter how hard I tried, how good I was, whatever I did, they would still find a way to destroy me,” she says.
Meghan’s relationship with the rest of the royal family is also covered. The prince reveals that his family were “quite impressed” when they met Meghan, but that some royals have misjudged her for having an “unconscious bias”. “The fact that I was dating an American actress was probably what clouded their judgment more than anything else in the beginning,” he recalls.
Harry says that part of the family thought that what his wife was going through was no big deal. “Some family members were like my wife, they had to go through it, so ‘why should your girlfriend be treated differently?’, ‘why should you get special treatment?’, ‘why should she be protected? ‘”, account. “I said the difference here is the race element.”
Who also draws attention to this factor is Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. For her, the fact that her daughter has a multiracial origin explains the treatment given to her by the British sensationalist press. “I remember very clearly saying to her, ‘This is about race.’ You might not want to hear this, but it sounds like it,” she says.
The third episode shows, among other things, the relationships of the now Duchess of Sussex with family members from whom she distanced herself, including her father, Thomas, and half-sister, Samantha. Meghan says she believes her father was selling information to the tabloids as her wedding to Harry approached.
She says she tried calling him, he didn’t pick up. Afterwards, she says that she received text messages from his number, using a way of speaking that made her suspicious. “He called me Meghan. He never called me that in my life,” she tells her. “
The last three episodes of the documentary series will be released next Thursday (15). The new episodes should bring new revelations about the couple’s life.
