As President Macron pointed out, this is a way to restart habits based on volunteerism and a spirit of responsibility
French President Emmanuel Macron put on his mask again today, estimating that it is necessary to “return to this habit”, “on a voluntary basis”, in the face of the increase in Covid-19 cases.
“I am following the recommendations of my minister,” he said with Health Minister François Bron, also wearing a mask, during a trip near Poitiers in central-western France.
“In the face of the rise of epidemic cases, I think it is good to set an example because we do not want to necessarily return to generalized obligations,” continued the head of state.
“Therefore, this is also a way to restart habits based on volunteerism and a spirit of responsibility,” he underlined.
Faced with a ninth wave of Covid-19 on top of flu and bronchiolitis outbreaks, the government is still refusing to make mask use mandatory but is not ruling out a tougher stance on it if the situation calls for it.
On Sunday, the health minister issued a “strong appeal” to urge the most vulnerable to get vaccinated as they face this wave.
In France, eight first waves brought some immunity to the population, which was largely vaccinated but which has delayed the administration of the two booster doses. However, although the overall number of hospitalized patients remains well below the very high levels seen this year, the outbreak risks hitting an already struggling health system.
The pandemic has killed more than 158,000 people in France, according to the World Health Organization, and more than 6.6 million worldwide.
