The popular magazine Wallpaper*, covering design and architecture, fashion, travel, art and lifestyle, has tribute to Athens, in “The Future Issue”.

Wallpaper hosts, among other things, a statement from the Deputy Minister of Culture Nikola Giatromanolaki, who explains that Athens is now moving away from the idealized image that characterized it, and which was connected to its past. In a 14-page feature we look at the city’s contemporary cityscape, hospitality options and the cultural transformation of a city as it enters its new golden age.

Trying to shed light on all those elements that will revive the image of the city, Wallpaper* refers to the case of the historic Hilton Hotel, which is expected to open its doors again in 2024, with a different face, but also the Greek – for which, after all, there are laudatory comments from the entire international press.

In the context of the “Greek Renaissance” – as he calls it – it is underlined that Athens is enjoying its transformation with a multitude of buildings that were reconstructed and renovated, but also with a series of large-scale projects.

Wallpaper explains that in the mid-20th century the country was established for its charm – the sun, the heat, the good food and the crystal clear beaches as well as its archaeological treasures. But today – and while all of the above continues to exist – the country and its capital has managed to integrate the different phases of its history. It is a melting pot where fresh trends, global influences and timeless local traditions meet.

Nikolas Giatromanolakis characteristically says “Everything coexists here, different styles and different periods and we should embrace them all. Greece traditionally has a strong bond with the outside element as exposure to a multi-layered urban space is common. It is a mixture that makes Athens unique”.

Greek identity is constantly evolving, and instead of looking back, he has his eyes fixed on the future. It is, in fact, a particularly positive future for the Mediterranean country. The architecture of the city is being redesigned, the hospitality industry is booming and all this is driven by sustainability, but also a wave of new cultural destinations.

Creativity is at its peak in the city, and the trajectory is upward after a decade of economic woes, political changes and physical problems brought on by the pandemic.

“The Greek capital, however, seems to be heading for sunnier times,” the article concludes.
