The Fairy, with the wonderful view of the bridge of Servia and the lake of Polyphytos (vid)

by

It was November 1976 when the inauguration of the longest bridge in Greece and the Balkans took place, with a total length of 1372 meters and a width of 13. The High Serbian Bridge was built to connect the two shores of the then newly created artificial lake Polyphytos, an elongated artificial lake in the valley of the river Aliakmonas, changing once again the geomorphological map of the country. In fact, for many years after its construction, it was considered one of the largest in all of Europe.

When construction began in 1972, the lake had not yet taken its final shape, with the sandals from its 27 giant columns being built on solid ground as well as its foundation. Its arched shape and the empty interior of its columns, were an element of safety and stability, in relation to all the previous bridges whose length did not exceed 250m and were straight. Gravel from the existing natural material of the river was used in the sandals and the embankments of the foundation, while the total materials that contributed to the construction were strong concrete, iron and steel.

Today it is part of the National Road Kozani-Larissa, and one of the two bridges that cross over the waters of the artificial lake Polyphytou.

However, the construction of the lake was fatal, as it forced the residents of the settlement of Neraida to relocate by closing the dam. Their history is long, starting from the SE Ponto in the area of Sevastia, where with the exchange of 1922 they leave all their belongings and with a suitcase in hand they settle near Lefkara, Kozani. But in 1929 they decide to go down the hill, and set up their home from the beginning, near the river Aliakmonas, taking advantage of the tax office offered by the liquid element of the river. They cultivate their fields and are engaged in animal husbandry, having a good life in a fairytale place, which the then Despot of Kozani, Joachim, impressedly calls a Fairy.

Today’s Fairy is a beautiful village that looks daily at its crystal clear lake waters that change colors based on the weather. Sometimes blue, sometimes gray, sometimes green, sometimes wild but most calm and serene. And when after the incessant rains of the area, the beautiful rainbow is reflected in it, then it becomes magical, offering its best spectacle, in an attempt to atone for everything that it inadvertently caused it.
