In the Netflix documentary about his departure from the royal family, Prince Harry said it was “scary” to see his brother Prince William “scream and scream” at him when they met to discuss Harry and Meghan’s future.

In the final episodes of the documentary series, Harry and Meghan tell why they decided to leave their royal duties and move to the US. They claim they have not received support from the royal family amid a barrage of negative content in the British press about Meghan. Buckingham Palace did not comment on Harry’s account.

Meghan says she even considered taking her own life. “I just thought, ‘This is all going to stop if I’m not here,'” she said.

After his wife spoke about her mental health, Prince Harry is said to have been devastated. However, he claims, he had been “trained” to care more about what people would think.

He said he hated himself for it and was ashamed of his own reaction, which was that of an “institutional Harry” rather than a husband.

“What she needed was much more than I was able to give,” he added.

DENIED TREATMENT

While having these suicidal thoughts, Meghan wanted to seek psychiatric help but “wasn’t allowed to,” according to her.

“They were concerned about how this would affect the institution’s image,” she said, without specifying who “they” were.

The prince added that “they” knew how bad his wife’s mental health was.

“They thought, ‘Why can’t she just deal with it? Everyone has dealt with it, why can’t she?’ But (Meghan’s situation) was different. It was very different.”

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, said hearing her daughter’s thoughts “broke her heart” and that the words “were not easy for a mother to hear”.

“I knew the situation was difficult, but being constantly tormented by these vultures, she really thought about not wanting to be here anymore,” said Doria, referring to the intrusion of the press in her daughter’s life.

REAL DISCUSSION

As things took a turn for the worse for the couple, Harry says he went to Sandringham, the royal estate in Norfolk, in 2020 to catch up with his father, brother and grandmother, the Queen. The idea was to think of scenarios for the role of the couple in the royal family.

“It was frightening to see my brother screaming and screaming at me and my father saying things that just weren’t true. And my grandmother sitting silently and kind of taking it all in,” said Harry.

He said his preference was to fulfill part of the royal family’s duties, with him and Meghan doing their own jobs but also supporting the queen. But it soon became clear that this was not a possibility.

“It became very clear very quickly that this was not up for discussion,” he said.

As for the queen, he said her ultimate goal and responsibility was the institution of the royal family.

BROTHER FIGHT

Harry also said that a joint statement was released after the meeting without his permission. Written on behalf of himself and his brother, the statement denied a story that William’s behavior had “pushed” Harry away from his duties.

Harry described the move as a “lie to protect my brother”.

“There was no other option at this point. I said, ‘we need to get out of here,'” says the prince.

He said Meghan didn’t ask him out and that rumors that it all happened because she “triggered” her husband is “pure misogyny”.

The documentary also reveals, among others, the following stories:

  • Prince Harry speaks out about the breakup of his relationship with his brother – accusing William’s office of leaking stories to the press – something he says they “promised” they would never do when they were younger.
  • He describes a “feud” between himself and his brother, saying that William “is now on the side of the institution”.
  • Harry speaks of “foul play” within the royal family’s dealings with the royal press, which would involve “constant briefings” and “leakage and story-making”.
  • The prince says “people” were upset that Meghan was “stealing the spotlight” or doing a better job than people who were “born to it”
  • He says he believes the stories published in the Mail on Sunday tabloid “were linked” to Meghan’s miscarriage. The Mail on Sunday has yet to comment.
  • Meghan said she wasn’t even “being thrown to the wolves” but rather “being used as food for the wolves”.
  • Meghan said seeing her father speaking to the press about her and the royal family was “incredibly heartbreaking”, adding it was “very embarrassing for the family”.
  • Beyonce texted Meghan her support following her interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, and Meghan said she was in disbelief that the singer knew who she was.
  • Harry was stunned after being denied access to the Queen on his return from Vancouver to discuss his departure from the UK.
  • Prince Harry found it “difficult” to attend Prince Philip’s funeral as he was forced to discuss family tensions with his father and brother. He claims he “had to make amends” and that he “could never get them to take any responsibility or make a genuine apology”.

The final three episodes of the six-part series, titled Harry & Meghan, were released on Thursday (15).

Filming for the series was completed before the Queen’s death in September of this year.
