three fragments, part of the Parthenon sculptures, which are currently kept in the Vatican Museums, Pope Francis is going to give to the archbishop of Athens and all Greece Hieronymos as announced by the Holy See, probably sending a message to the British Museum. The Vatican is done like this the last example of a state which returned its fragments from the Parthenon marbles, leaving the British Museum among those not following the same path, Bloomberg points out.

This gesture is characterized as “a sign of the sincere desire to continue on the universal path of witnessing the Truth”. For this reason, according to the statement of the Holy See, Pope Francis “decided to give to His Beatitude Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Hieronymus II, the three fragments of the Parthenon, which have been carefully preserved for centuries in the Pontifical Collections and in the Vatican Museums and are exposed to millions of visitors from all over the world.”

These are three fragments which they arrived in Rome in the 19th century under unknown conditions. The first is the head of a horse that came from the west pediment of the Parthenon and was part of one of the four horses of the goddess Athena, in her dispute with Poseidon for the sovereignty of Attica. Then there is the head of a boy holding a disk, probably offering offerings to the goddess as part of the Panathenaic procession. The child must have been part of the frieze.
Finally, the third fragment is a bearded male head that was on one of the metopes that were placed on the south side of the temple, where the centaur fight, the fight between the Centaurs and the Lapiths, was depicted.

“A year ago, Jerome and the Pope had met on the occasion of Francis’ trip to Cyprus and the Greek capital, from December 2 to 6. Both had confirmed their desire to continue together on the path of brotherhood and peace. Francis, by the way, had acknowledged the wrongs committed by Catholics against Orthodox Christians.
