Tributes have been paid to ska legend Terry Hall in Coventry where he was born, and a large number of requests have been made for a monument to be erected in recognition of his work.

The leader of The Specials, who died on Monday, grew up in the town where the group formed in the late 1970s.

Two Tone, a blend of traditional Jamaican ska with elements of punk rock and new wave, pioneered by Terry Hall, is embedded in Coventry’s musical heritage.

Signs on the city’s ring road read “so many so young RIP Terry Hall”.

“Thanks for the memories” reads a billboard outside the HMV Empire concert venue.

Phil Rooney, director of HMV Empire, said Terry Hall should be honored with a statue.

“Terry was a very important part of Coventry’s music history, possibly world music history,” he added. “I think we really should have a day dedicated to The Specials in Coventry, which has been established in LA,” he told the BBC.

Pete Chambers from the Coventry Music Museum called Terry Hall “one of a kind”.

“There wouldn’t be a Coventry Music Museum if we didn’t have The Specials and the Two Tone movement in the city,” he said. “The Two Tone movement really resonated and still has today,” he emphasized.
