“The Recruit”: The spy series you can watch in a weekend

by

The first season is a basic guide to what not to do as an agent

The new spy thriller series “The Recruit” went straight to the top of Netflix titles since its release on December 16th.

Centineo is Owen Hendricks, a young lawyer who gets a job with the CIA. On his first two days on the job, he is asked to work alongside Max Meladze. She is a former CIA agent with a troubled past who now threatens to reveal many of the agency’s secrets if she is not acquitted of a crime she committed.

The first time we meet Owen he’s singing Taylor Swift on a toilet break while on a life-and-death mission in Russia. The second we see him, two weeks later, he’s banging his knees to Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” while waiting to meet the big boss (Vondie Curtis-Hall) on his second day on the job.

Despite his good mood and tremendous energy to meet the demands of his new job, Owen falls headlong into the case and ends up literally eating his own face. Very quickly things spiral out of control for him, as he begins to travel from one country to another trying to escape those who have targeted him. Having disturbed many parastatal organizations in his quest to find the truth, Owen becomes the No.1 easy target for many who want to get him out of the way.

GenZs will recognize in the motif of ‘The Recruit’ a replica of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst from the 2018 Prime Video series who is forced into the field long before he is ready.

Owen has two roommates ex-girlfriend Hannah Copeland (Fivel Stewart) and Terence (Daniel Quincy Annoh). Among the people who become emotionally involved with him is his colleague, Amelia (Kaylah Zander). From the first two episodes, Agent Owen juggles between top secret travels around the world and his relationships with the people around him.

It all revolves around the exhausted Hendricks, who seems to only sleep on the plane between his trips.

Adrenaline and the comical element

Noah Centineo is still in his element and manages to seamlessly blend action with humor throughout the film. His awkward conversations, inexperience and hasty movements create a hero that does not only resemble a CIA agent. But it is certain that from now on the actor will continue to experiment chasing the roles he likes the most.

It didn’t take long for The Recruit to reach the top of Netflix’s trending leaderboard. Series creator Alexi Hawley has revealed that he has his own plan for a second season and is optimistic about the show’s performance, but has not clarified if and when the second cycle will indeed be renewed.
