The Independent Press Ethics Organization (IPSO) said on Tuesday it had received more than 17,500 complaints about the article written by presenter Jeremy Clarkson about Meghan Markle
Britain’s Sun newspaper apologized today for TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson’s article about Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, which earlier this week broke a record for complaints to Britain’s ethics watchdog.
“We at the Sun regret the publication of this article and offer our sincere apologies,” the paper said in a statement, adding that Clarkson’s piece had been removed from its website and archive.
In the op-ed, published last week, Clarkson wrote of Meghan:
“At night, I can’t sleep as I lay there gritting my teeth and dreaming of the day she’ll be paraded naked through the streets of every British city while crowds shout ‘Shame’ and throw poo at her.”
The Independent Press Ethics Organization (IPSO) said on Tuesday it had received more than 17,500 complaints about the article, the most it has ever received for any other text since it was founded in 2014.
More than 60 MPs have signed a letter written by Caroline Noakes, chair of parliament’s women and equalities committee, to the Sun’s editorial board warning that such articles contribute to a climate of hatred and violence against women.
In his own statement on Twitter on Monday, Clarkson said he was “horrified at the pain he caused” and promised to “be more careful in the future”.
