France: First SMS in history to be auctioned off as ‘non-exchangeable brand’

by

The first SMS in history, sent by the British Vodafone on December 3, 1992, will be sold at auction tomorrow, in the form of NFT, this “non-exchangeable digital brand” that has upset the art market – and not only – worldwide .

The SMS received at that time by Richard Jervis, a Vodafone partner, consists of 15 characters that compose a wish: “Merry Christmas”. It will be sold at auction by Aguttes in France.

The buyer will be able to pay with cryptocurrencies and will become the sole owner of a digital and unique copy of the original communication protocol with which the first SMS in the world was transmitted.

Vodafone has announced that the proceeds will go to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

NFTs, unknown until a year ago, are based on blockchain technology, are unique and can not be exchanged with other counterparts, hence the name “non-fungible”. For some it’s the “golden egg goose” of the contemporary art market, and within a few months they have conquered auction houses, from where they are sold at exorbitant prices – the record is still held by a digital work by American artist Beeple, which sold for 69 , $ 3 million last March.
