The famous singer Maureen McGovern with her song “The Morning After” has spread a message of hope for 50 years. But now she becomes her own “beacon” of hope as she learns to live with Alzheimer’s disease.

Although the progressive and incurable disease has begun to rob the 73-year-old artist of her everyday vocabulary, she still effortlessly recites the song’s lyrics, speaking to People, emphasizing the line: “‘There is hope. Don’t give up.’ That’s my mantra. Do not give up”.

McGovern opened up about her illness and announced her retirement from the stage last August in a shocking post on her personal website and a Facebook video, noting that at first she “struggled with the inevitable shock and fear and despair.” .

But today, she keeps those fears at bay with an active life and a strong sense of purpose. She resides in a Columbus retirement community that offers her both independence and security, and is surrounded by a close circle of family and devoted friends. “I really, really think I’m blessed for so many things,” she said.

Although her concert days are over, McGovern still entertains residents of the retirement community, along with a jazz pianist giving occasional recitals. “You take it day by day,” he said, adding: “Every day is a day to make it better.”

Her joy, she says, also comes from her family — being close to her sister’s three children and seven grandchildren — and a large circle of friends who have rallied to her side. And there is joy, he adds, “that I’m still here, honestly.”

“I’m not afraid to die, especially,” added the singer. “I just want to make sure I get everything I can out of life. Whatever is out there, we don’t know. So you just have to start singing.”
