Ridley Scott: Joaquin Phoenix forced me to rewrite the Napoleon script

The film is expected to be released in 2023

Ridley Scott revealed to “Empire” magazine that the choice by Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, for the upcoming historical epic “Napoleon” resulted in the script being rewritten from scratch so the actor would feel more confident. Phoenix, who reunites with Scott after the 2000 film Gladiator, stars in Napoleon alongside Vanessa Kirby and Tahar Rahim.

“Joaquin is anything but conventional. Not on purpose, but by intuition. This makes him check everything. If something bothers him, he will tell you,” said the British director and added that “he made him [Ναπολέων] separate by constantly asking”.

“With Joaquin, we can rewrite the movie from scratch because he’s uncomfortable. And that’s what happened with ‘Napoleon,'” the director continued. “We broke up the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. He made everything bigger and better.”

The film is expected to be released in 2023.
