‘Neither Bolsonaro nor Lula, I am Brazil’, says Zezé Di Camargo, leader of the sertanejos who went to support a candidate for re-election

by

Supporting base of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the artistic world, sertanejo musicians went to Brasília before the second round of the 2022 presidential elections to formalize what they called a “partnership” and emphasize the confidence of the class in the then president.

The singers Gusttavo Lima, Leonardo, Chitãozinho (from the duo with Xororó), Fernando (from the duo with Sorocaba), George Henrique (from the duo with Rodrigo) and Sula Miranda participated in the meeting, among others. The group was led by Zezé Di Camargo (from the duo with Luciano), who, at the time, said he was certain that “the best thing for Brazil is this formation that is here”.

Lula’s victory (PT) made the artist change his mind, as he himself reveals. “I’m not Bolsonaro, I’m not Lula, I’m Brazil. F5. Despite this, at a show in Miami at the beginning of the year, Zezé took the opportunity to praise Bolsonarist blogger Allan dos Santos, who has been on the run in the United States since his arrest was decreed by the fake news inquiry.

Now with the PT in charge, the sertanejo draws a parallel to explain his point of view. “If I’m on a plane, I’m not going to hope it crashes because I want the pilot to fuck off. That’s ignorance.” In the conversation below, he also talks about his daughter Wanessa’s relationship with Dado Dolabella and explains the origin of the name of his project “Rústico”, with a special show scheduled for the 14th in São Paulo.

What can the public of São Paulo expect from your show from the “Rústico” project?

In 2023 I want to divide my time between Zezé Di Camargo and Luciano and Zezé ‘Rústico’, two different products, despite singing the consecrated songs in both. But the band is different, the scenario is different. I live a special moment, it was a detachment from the pandemic stop. A re-oxygenation of my career.

What does being rustic mean to you?

Rustic, for me, is the way to act, regardless of whether it’s a guy who rides, say, a Harley Davidson with a beard, a jacket and a tattoo. Rustic is not just clothing, it is the way of life. Zeca Pagodinho is rustic and he continues with his life in Xerém (RJ), he hasn’t changed his way of thinking, of acting, he’s a simple guy.

Do you think that nowadays there is a lack of rustic men in Brazil?

No laughs). Times change, people too. When I say rustic it is not in the sense of machismo, I believe that there may be people who are simpler in their way of life. I’m considered a romantic guy, I send flowers, 99% of my songs exalt women.

Last year, you were at the head of a group of country people who supported the re-election of Jair Bolsonaro. What is your position now, with Lula in power?

If I’m on a plane, I’m not going to hope it crashes because I want the pilot to fuck off. That’s ignorance. Now Brazil has a new driver, I have to root for him. I’ve always had political opinions looking for what would be the best, never thinking about enjoying government, having government favors. I’ve already donated music for free to political campaigns thinking about a better country. I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t the best thing for Brazil and I changed my mind. I’m not Bolsonaro, I’m not Lula, I’m Brazil. And what I think is best I’ll cheer. I’m neither left nor right, but I think Brazil has to be fine, regardless of who is in power.

What do you expect from the next four years of PT?

May he do the best for the country. Who has to be in front is the people, who pays is the people. I come from a poor background and I know what it’s like to sleep without eating, without having a plate of food on the table. That’s why I believe and think that it’s the people who have to be well. Whoever does good for the country, I will be on their side. I hope we find the way. I think Brazil [na época do Bolsonaro] it was heading towards a good moment, but the route has changed and let’s hope it bears fruit.

What do you think about the attack by extremists on the Planalto, STF and Congress, this Sunday (8)?

(The original interview had been done two days before the invasion, and this supplementary question was sent this Monday morning (9). Until the publication of this report, the singer had not yet answered it).

It is speculated that his daughter Wanessa will be on the next BBB. Do you think she had a chance to win?

I’m watching this conversation, but she hasn’t told me anything. It’s her life, I guide some things, I give advice. But if any decision she makes is contrary to mine, I will support it. Son after he grows up is of the world.

How is your relationship with her boyfriend, actor Dado Dolabella?

I have to respect my daughter and her choice. I have affection for the people she chose. And much love for [ex-marido] Marcus Buaiz who is the father of my two grandchildren. My relationship with him was almost like father and son. As for Dado, of course their relationship at the beginning, way back [entre 2000 e 2002] it was troubled, because of their age. Today it is totally different, they are two adults who are in fullness. I want them to be happy just like I want that for Marcus too. I want to be on good terms with everyone. I am no longer old enough for confrontations and debates.
