To play the taxi driver, to get into the skin of the role, De Niro went to extremes
In the iconic Taxi Driver, the 1976 psychological neo-noir thriller directed by Martin Scorsese, the film’s protagonist is Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a Vietnam War veteran who suffers from depression and works nights as a taxi driver to combat his insomnia.
To play the taxi driver, to get into the “skin of the role” De Niro went to extremes. Being a fan of “Method Acting” he reportedly worked 12 hours a day as a taxi driver on the streets of New York!
In fact, according to a hilarious story mentioned by the author Andrew J. Rausch in his book “Films of Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro”, a passenger recognized the actor at the wheel of the taxi and characteristically commented: “this is acting … One year Oscar, the next, you’re driving a taxi!”
It is noted that two years ago the Italian-American actor had won the Oscar for Best Actor playing Vito Corleone at a young age (Marlon Brando played “The Godfather” at an older age).
