Among other things, the text accuses “the Biden administration of not taking measures” after these “attacks”, which it attributes to “radicalized”.
The House of Representatives, which has been controlled by the Republicans for a few days, approved yesterday Wednesday two texts on abortion, which, however, have essentially only a symbolic value.
It was a way for the American right-wing party to satisfy its base, after last week a harsh light was cast on factional squabbles in the process to elect a new “speaker”, the body’s president.
The first resolution, supported by all Republican elected officials, condemns “attacks” against “institutions, associations and churches” opposed to her abortion.
It specifically refers to violent actions since May 2, 2022, when a leak revealed that the US Supreme Court was preparing to dynamit the right to abortion at the federal level.
Among other things, the text accuses “the Biden administration of not taking measures” after these “attacks”, which it attributes to “radicalized”.
The second resolution calls on doctors present during abortions to offer “care” to “save” the fetus if possible.
The family planning organization Planned Parenthood strongly criticized this text, which it sees as “nothing more than a strategy of manipulation through fear” and an attempt “to stigmatize abortion”.
A large majority of Democrats opposed the resolutions, with House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries stressing that the decision about whether or not to have an abortion should be made by the woman, her family and doctors, no one else.
The two texts have only symbolic value: there is no way they will pass the Senate, where Democrats have retained control, or be signed by President Joe Biden and become law.
The Republican assault on abortion rights may be a double-edged sword: Americans overwhelmingly — even those living in heavily conservative states — favor protecting it.
