Sofia is among Europe’s most popular tourist destinations for luxury wellness holidays, according to a study conducted by OVO Network, Bulgarian news agency VTA reports.
The study of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe takes into account the number of Michelin-starred restaurants, luxury spas and 5-star hotels per one million tourists, the safety index and luxury-seeking trends.
Sofia came in third for wellness getaways with 83 spas 4 stars and above, which equates to 60 luxury spas per one million tourists.
The average number of 4-star and above spas in a city in the study is 129, which equates to 26 per million tourists.
The only cities to beat Sofia were Barcelona (which has 87 luxury spas per million tourists) and Zurich with just under 74 per million tourists, according to the Bulgarian news agency.
Berlin and Paris were in 4th and 5th place.

As reported, Sofia has 12 5-star hotels which is estimated at 8.7 per one million tourists (5th in overall ranking). The Swiss cities of Zurich and Geneva are the top European cities for luxury vacations in Europe, with Madrid completing the top three.
